    About Shin-Yoshiwara

Originally established in 1617 near Nihonbashi, the Yoshiwara Pleasure District was the only officially licensed red-light district by the Tokugawa Shogunate. In 1655, it was relocated to its current location in Taito Ward and became known as Shin-Yoshiwara. Surrounded by high walls and a moat ominously named Ohaguro-dobu (the “blackened teeth ditch”), Yoshiwara evolved into a vibrant social hub where class boundaries blurred. Daimyo lords, wealthy merchants, and cultural elites mingled here.

The courtesans of Yoshiwara were often highly educated, making the district a cultural hotspot — influencing kabuki, ukiyo-e woodblock prints, and other key aspects of Edo-period art. Seasonal festivals and elegant ceremonies made it a destination not just for pleasure, but also for sightseeing. Though it survived into the modern era, the district was officially abolished in 1958 with the enforcement of Japan’s Anti-Prostitution Law, bringing an end to Yoshiwara’s long and layered history.

  • Asakusa’s Kannon & The Path to Shin-YOSHIWARA

This tour follows the story of Kannon-sama in Asakusa and the historical route to Shin-Yoshiwara.

    broken image

    Tour Overview

This tour is divided into two parts - a spiritual beginning and a glimpse into Edo-period elegance.

    Part 1: The Story of Asakusa’s “Kannon-sama”

Over 1,400 years ago, two fisherman brothers repeatedly pulled a mysterious statue from the Sumida River. They brought it ashore to the area now known as Komagata. A local scholar identified it as a sacred statue of Kannon, the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy. Moved by this event, he became a monk and transformed his home into a temple — the origin of Senso-ji, Tokyo’s oldest temple.

We begin the tour in Komagata, then visit Senso-ji and Asakusa Shrine, where the two brothers and the monk are now enshrined as deities.

    Part 2: Walking Toward Shin-Yoshiwara

About 500 years ago, the licensed red-light district known as Shin-Yoshiwara flourished as a cultural and social melting pot. During the Edo period, taking a small boat (chokibune) along the Sanya Canal to reach Yoshiwara was considered the height of sophistication.

Though the canal is gone, we'll walk the historic route and visit temples, shrines, and places connected to Jūzaburō Tsutaya (real name: Karamaru Kitagawa), a publisher born and raised in Shin-Yoshiwara. He rose from humble beginnings to become a major cultural figure, supporting artists like Katsushika Hokusai.
