    About Shin-YOSHIWARA

The "Yoshiwara Red-Light District," officially recognized by the Tokugawa Shogunate, was established near Nihonbashi in 1617. After moving to its current location in Taito Ward in 1655, it became known as "Shin-Yoshiwara." Surrounded by high walls and a waterway called the "Ohabukuro Dōbu," Yoshiwara developed into a social hub that transcended class divisions. It became a place for interaction between samurai, merchants, and cultural figures. Many of the courtesans in Yoshiwara were highly educated, contributing to the development of Edo culture, including Kabuki and ukiyo-e. Yoshiwara hosted seasonal events and became a popular tourist attraction. While it continued to operate after the Meiji era, the practice was abolished in 1958 with the enforcement of the Anti-Prostitution Law, marking the end of the long history of the Yoshiwara pleasure district.

    Tour Details

Tokyo’s cherry blossoms begin blooming around mid-March, with different varieties blooming at different times. The most famous type in Tokyo is the Somei Yoshino, which marks the peak of the hanami (cherry blossom viewing) season when it starts to bloom. Even within the same area, slight differences in environment can affect blooming times, allowing cherry blossoms to be enjoyed in Asakusa and nearby areas for about three weeks.

At Asakusa Guide Club, we offer tours that take you to both famous, bustling cherry blossom spots and hidden, peaceful locations where you can enjoy a more private experience. Our expert guides, who know Asakusa and Ueno inside and out, will take you to the best viewing spots based on the daily blooming conditions.

This limited-time tour runs for only three weeks! While we have set tour times, if you prefer a quieter, early-morning experience, we can arrange a private tour for you. Please contact us via the Private Guide Inquiry Form for more details.

  • Asakusa’s Kannon & The Path to Shin-YOSHIWARA

This tour follows the story of Kannon-sama in Asakusa and the historical route to Shin-Yoshiwara.

    broken image

    Tour Details

First Half: The Origins of Sensoji Temple

About 1,400 years ago, two fishermen casting their nets in what is now the Sumida River repeatedly caught a small statue. A local scholar examined it and identified it as Kannon-sama (the Bodhisattva of Compassion). Deeply moved, the scholar became a monk and turned his home into a temple, marking the beginning of Sensoji Temple.

This tour starts at Komagata, the place where Kannon-sama was believed to have come ashore. We will visit Sensoji Temple, which enshrines Kannon-sama, Asakusa Shrine, which honors the two fishermen and the scholar as deities, and other significant temples and shrines related to this legend, tracing the rich history of the area.

Second Half: The Story of Shin-Yoshiwara

Around 500 years ago, during the Edo period, Shin-Yoshiwara was a famous entertainment district. Back then, visitors would take small boats (chokibune) along the San'ya Canal from the Sumida River to reach Shin-Yoshiwara.

In this part of the tour, we will walk along the path where the canal used to be and explore places related to Tsutaya Juzaburo (Kitagawa Karamaru), a successful publisher who grew up in Shin-Yoshiwara.

    Who was Kitagawa Karamaru?

Orphaned at a young age, Karomaru was adopted by a teahouse family. Although he had no wealth or status, he became a publisher in Shin-Yoshiwara and helped the district flourish. Later, he moved to Nihonbashi and supported famous UKIYO-E artists like Katsushika Hokusai.
